Certified nursing assistants (CNAs) provide up to 80% of the direct care to older adults in long‐term care facilities. CNAs are perceived as being at the bottom of the hierarchy among healthcare professionals often negatively affecting their job satisfaction. However, many CNAs persevere in providing quality care and even reporting high levels of job satisfaction. The aim of the present investigation was to identify primary themes that may help CNAs make meaning of their chosen career; thus potentially partially explaining increases (...) in job satisfaction among this group. Focus groups were conducted with CNAs at three long‐term care facilities. Four themes emerged from the data: CNA work is good or special; CNA as relationship builder; CNA as expert; CNA as team member. These themes reflect the perceptions that these CNAs held in regard to themselves and their relationships to others in the work environment and, when present, can contribute to intrinsic job satisfaction. Our meaning‐making themes support the premise that CNAs do not passively accept the evaluations of others but instead actively frame identities that validate their importance to residents and the institution. Este artigo busca esc(r)utar o pensamento da filósofa iorubá Oyèrónkẹ́ Oyěwùmí, que modifica nossa compreensão das culturas africanas, notadamente em relação à raça e ao gênero. Oyèrónkẹ́ Oyěwùmí ao nos chamar a atenção que antes da colonização britânica a sociedade Oyó-Iorubá do sudoeste da Nigéria não se organizava em torno de hierarquias decorrentes da di-visão por corpo generificado, mas da senioridade, nos apresenta cosmologia e instituições socioculturais Oyó-Iorubás assentadas na cosmopercepção de quem não é permanentemente e indefinidamente mais velho ou (...) mais novo que outra pessoa. Nesse sentido, trazer o pensamento de Oyèrónkẹ́ Oyěwùmí para o exercício do ensino de filosofia contribui para pensá-lo além da transmissão histórica da filosofia e das ideias de pensadores ocidentais, abordando assim seres e saberes africanos que deságuam em tradições, cosmologias e instituições socioculturais presentes no Brasil, das quais professoras(es) e estudantes são herdeiras(os). Damit verliert sie eine ganze Dimension der philosophischen Tradition. This Open Access book (see link to Taylor & Francis below) critically examines the recent discussions of powers and powers-based accounts of causation. The author then develops an original view of powers-based causation that aims to be compatible with the theories and findings of natural science. Recently, there has been a dramatic revival of realist approaches to properties and causation, which focus on the relevance of Aristotelian metaphysics and the notion of powers for a scientifically informed view of causation. Ingthorsson argues that one central feature of powers-based accounts of causation is arguably incompatible with what is today recognised as fact in the sciences, notably that all interactions are thoroughly reciprocal. Ingthorsson’s powerful particulars view of powers-based causation accommodates for the reciprocity of interactions. It also draws out the consequences of that view for the issue of causal necessity and offers a way to understand the constitution and persistence of compound objects as causal phenomena. Furthermore, Ingthorsson argues that compound entities, so understood, are just as much processes as they are substances. McTaggart’s argument for the unreality of time, first published in 1908, set the agenda for 20th-century philosophy of time. Yet there is very little agreement on what it actually says—nobody agrees with the conclusion, but still everybody finds something important in it. This book presents the first critical overview of the last century of debate on what is popularly called "McTaggart’s Paradox". Scholars have long assumed that McTaggart’s argument stands alone and does not rely on any contentious ontological principles. The (...) author demonstrates that these assumptions are incorrect—McTaggart himself explicitly claimed his argument to be dependent on the ontological principles that form the basis of his idealist metaphysics. The result is that scholars have proceeded to understand the argument on the basis of their own metaphysical assumptions, duly arriving at very different interpretations. This book offers an alternative reading of McTaggart’s argument, and at the same time explains why other commentators arrive at their mutually incompatible interpretations.
